POLDEN HILLS GROUP CAROL SERVICE
Donna Cooper, President of Puriton WI, welcomed over 100 members from the 8 WIs comprising the Polden Group to the Carol Service at Puriton Church. There was a suitably festive atmosphere as the path leading to the church was illuminated with lanterns and the church was decorated with lit candles.
Following opening prayers led by Reverend Doris Goddard, vicar of Puriton, the congregation gave a rousing rendition of “O come all ye faithful”, which was followed by contributions from the various WIs.
Shapwick provided a Christmas miscellany of readings, including a description of some seasonal traditions from round the world and a politically correct version of “The night before Christmas”.
Walton's talented choir gave us a beautiful version of the carol “Do you hear what I hear”.
Ashcott reminded many of us of Christmas times past with a reading “Oranges at Christmas” followed by the humorous retelling of the Nativity from the point of view of the innkeeper who just wanted to go to sleep!
Compton Dundon gave an original sketch on the theme “What does Christmas mean to you”. One by one all the material manifestations of the season were discarded until the true meaning of Christmas was discovered to be the most important.
The sound of “Silent Night” sung in the original German introduced Weston Zoyland who told us of the origins of this famous and much loved carol. The congregation then joined in to sing the English version.
Woolavington explored the thoughts of some of the animals at the manger in readings and a carol “The friendly beasts”.
Puriton rounded off the evening with an amusing and tuneful version of “The twelve days of Christmas, consisting of increasingly irate daily letters written by Elizabeth Brown to her erstwhile best beloved following receipt of all the gifts.
After refreshments of mince pies, tea and coffee we dispersed reflecting on another excellent carol service showing once again what a talented group we have in the Poldens.
